Get It Straight! Hair Straightening Treatments at Pellé

As one of my favourite comediennes Rita Rudner once said:

Well, curly haired folks, we've got the goods on hair straightening here at Pellé! We offer two different treatments: Cysteine Complex curl relaxing treatment and L'Oreal X-Tenso hair straightening treatment.

Senior stylist Jess is our Cysteine Complex expert - she swears by it for curl relaxing and smoothing. The treatment uses all natural ingredients - no harsh chemicals! Cysteine Complex works with your hair's natural composition to restructure, soften, and release curls from your hair, leaving you with smooth, straighter and more manageable hair.

The treatment itself only takes about an hour and depending on your hair, it can last between three and six months. 

New senior stylist Andrea is our X-Tenso expert - the treatment transforms curly or frizzy hair to smooth, sleek locks. The treatment takes about two hours but leaves your hair silky smooth and shiny for up to two months!

Andrea likes X-Tenso because it's easier on your hair than Japanese straightening. It also helps keep your hair's natural volume, so your hair won't be flat - this gives your hair a more natural look and flow. X-Tenso uses new technology for noticeably increased conditioning, making your hair smoother to the touch. Nice!

It's kinda crazy how time flies when you're doing great hair - it's been two years since Pellé Hair Salon opened here in downtown Vancouver! Virtual champagne and cupcakes for all!

Laser Hair Removal - now at Pellé Hair Salon!

Keeping your legs clear of fuzz is always nice in the summer (even if hasn't been very summery here in Vancouver).

Laser hair removal is a long term hair removal solution - and it's faster, less expensive and a lot less painful that electrolysis. Imagine no more shaving, plucking or waxing!

We asked our senior esthetician Massy to answer a few FAQs about our new laser hair removal services at Pellé:

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser system uses light to target and mildly damage the hair follicle, without damaging the skin. It's even safe on the delicate skin of your face and neck. Once the laser has reached the hair follicle, it effectively de-activates the follicle to prevent the hair from growing back. 

How long does it take?

For best results, I recommend a series of 5 to 7 treatments, with four weeks between each treatment. This may vary by client. Your hair has three distinct stages of growth (and only one of them is optimal for laser hair removal) which is why it takes multiple treatments to achieve the smoothest results.

Is the treatment painful?

Everyone's skin is different! We have a cooling system that helps soothe the skin as the laser does its work, but some clients may prefer a topical anesthetic to help minimize discomfort. We'll figure out which works best for you. 

If I have too many laser treatments, will I become a supervillain?

No.

Hair Extensions with Chemy at Pellé Hair Salon

Whether you've pulled a rebellious Britney Spears or you're just interested in adding length or volume for a dynamic new look, hair extensions might be the way to go - and Pellé is the place to come for your faux locks!

Our stylist Chemy is an extensions expert and she does an amazing job. Here's one of her latest clients, going from short to long:

Stunning Colour and Cuts with Jess

One of our intrepid stylists, Jess, did a photo shoot recently for a Joico competition that she's entering and she's sharing the photos with us!

Here's her first lovely model Roxane, before and after:

Here's what Jess had to say about the techniques she used to achieve Roxane's look: 

For Roxane's hair, I used three different colours to accent the texture in the cut.  I wanted to draw attention to her eyes, so for a semi dramatic effect I made the hair around her face a soft beige colour. I cut her an asymmetric fringe as well.

Even though this was a cut specifically for a photo shoot, Roxane is going to get a lot of use out of this style. Instead of fighting with her hair, I worked with the way it wanted to fall naturally. The layers are cut to add volume to the crown area.

Jess used different techniques on her lovely second model, Jenna: 

One of Jenna's complaints with her hair was that the curl wasn't coming through, which is one of the major concerns of my curly hair clients. Layering is important and vital to maintaining an even curl throughout the hair.

Jenna likes to wear her hair off of her face - taking that into consideration, I cut her hair so that it will naturally flow off of her face. Then I went back in and added more layers to add more movement to the hair.

I was quite lucky to use Jenna as a model as she has never coloured her hair before and was open to anything. For Jenna I wanted to keep it somewhat on the simple side. So I enriched her base colour to a medium red brown and then wove pieces in that would mimic old highlights. The result was not only stunning but allows Jenna to easily style her hair.

New Smoothing Treatment and Royal Wedding Hair

I know everyone was super excited to see Kate Middleton's dress during the royal wedding last weekend but hairdressers the world over were on the edge of their seats waiting for OUR main event - her hair!

In the end, I couldn't decide which I liked better - Kate's demi-chignon, half up, half down for the ceremony (with the tiara! Got to get me one of those):

And the Oscar for Best Hair Goes To...

I don't know about you, but I mainly watch the Oscars for the fashion. In fact, Anne Hathaway's 10,000 costume changes throughout the broadcast were the only thing that really kept me awake this year. What was James Franco on?? And where can I get some of it?

I may not be a great judge of film - but I sure do know hair. Here are a few of my thoughts on Oscar's red carpet hairstyles this year.

The Good

Halle Berry always looks fantastic, but I thought her 'do was particularly smashing. Great cut and texture - I loved how her hair seemed like continuation of the frothy tulle on her Marchesa dress.

I haven't seen Winter's Bone yet (apparently it's not about a dog named Winter), but I did love Jennifer Lawrence's easy, healthy looking locks atop her sleek red Calvin Klein.

I don't know if this vintage Valentino is my favourite, Florence Welch - but it sure makes your colour look great!

Oh, Helen Mirren. It is my greatest wish to age as gracefully and beautifully as you are. I thought her silvery blonde 'do was chic, glamorous and no nonsense all at once - rather like Dame Helen herself.

The Bad

I'm usually a fan of Scarlett Johansson's style but I could not get behind this waaaay too messy 'do. I'm all for a casual, je-ne-care-pas approach to these events but ScarJo...come on. It's like your hair got in a fight on the way over. Just...just brush it out, honey. Brush it out. 

I did like her dress from the back, though.

Also, I have nothing but love for Sharon Stone, but this high high hair, coupled with the black dress and intense makeup, was a little much for me. I kept waiting for something to bust out of her hair, like a crow or Michael Douglas. Chilling.

The Winner

For me, the highest honour of the evening went to Mila Kunis' chic finger-wavy up-do.

I thought the soft style really suited her - very old Hollywood glamour - and paired with that stunning lilac  Elie Saab Couture gown, I thought Mila swept the night. You know, I call her "Mila" - 'cause we're BFFs. In my mind.
